After doing more research, I chose a new article written by Kate Silver called “When Obsession With Beauty Becomes a Disease”. This article states the influence the media has on how people view what outer beauty should look like. I think this article touches on a subject that is not only is a major issue now but also hits close to home. Being a young girl especially in this generation, we are constantly seeing beauty around us. In magazines, ads, etc. There are models everywhere and growing up, we see what they look like and strive to be like that. Why do we do this? Well you see, we think this is what we should look like. Society has changed the way others look at not only beauty around them but beauty in themselves. With this issue, young girls look at magazine articles and photos of models and instantly shame themselves for not looking like them. With this change of beauty, people are slowly losing confidence in themselves and it is creating larger issues. Beauty now is seen as an outer thing, but there is more to it. We have been faced with this problem so long that the idea of inner beauty has disappeared. I am very passionate about this topic. I noticed when I was growing up I looked up to models, striving to look like them. We think that if you’re “beautiful” according to society you will be happy and be satisfied with life but that’s not what It is all about. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Looks are not apart of it. Everyone is unique and made to look differently, that’s what makes us who we are. To be honest, if we all looked the same, this world would be quite boring. Our looks or what we do with our looks whether its makeup, hair, etc. gives us the ability to express ourselves.

I feel like beauty is sort of an emotion, it is the feelings or emotions that you experience when looking at something that is “beautiful”. This world is full of beauty and I feel like us as a society need to learn to appreciate our surroundings. One question I really want to expand on is how can beauty affect those living in a community? I feel like communities have been sort of separated due to the competition of beauty. This is where my article I chose comes in. I could expand on the fact how young children have been competing for beauty, trying to look better than others causing many issues such as loss of friends, constant fighting, and emotional issues like being self conscious or depressed.  Being civil can help bring each other together. Also doing thing in your community together to appreciate what is around you is very important. I know in my little town, we do many different activities bringing us all together and it is really beautiful to see everyone, out there doing something. It just makes things better and happier and I know it is very beautiful to experience.
