Learning Outcome 2

Learning Outcome #2:

For my Significant writing project I used four articles from four different authors, Yo-Yo Ma, Boslough, Lehrer and Henneke.

One of my favorite quotes came from the article “The Future of Science… is Art?” written by Jonah Lehrer. In this he states “In doing science, even though words and equations are used with the intention of having precise meaning, it is almost impossible not to reason by physical analogy, not to form mental pictures, not to imagine balls bouncing and pendulums swinging.” (Lehrer, 5). This quote stood out to me because in order for it to make complete sense in this essay I needed fully explain it. I had to step out of the box to explain that in order for us to transport medical information from the doctor to patient we need to translate it into simpler more understandable terms for the average human. I then backed this quote up with an example with kids. If you were explaining the function of the hand to a seven year old they will not understand medical terms. In this case, you explain the function of the hand as if it were a claw in a claw machine. Knowing your audience is very important when explaining crucial information.

With this quote I was not afraid to expand further and use examples to back things up. Also my claim sentences became a lot stronger. My overall “quote sandwich” has become a lot better making my quotes pop out and make more sense within the essay. This improvement has created a constant flow throughout my essays and made it less choppy. I have learned that having an awful claim sentence or not one at all distracts the reader and makes them lose focus. This also happens with poor quotes that have not been fully explained for explained at all.
