After reading and annotating “Is it OK to make art? written by Rhys Southan I found many things the author had stated very interesting. One connection that really drew a picture for me was when the author brought up the scenario about the child drowning. Personally after reading this I thought about it for some time. In exact words the author stated “Suppose you saw a child drowning in a pond: would you jump in and rescue her, even if you hadn’t pushed her in? Even if it meant ruining your clothes?” This really caught my eye and it made me think about the connection and message he was trying to convey. I believe the author was explaining how it is important to take risks and sometimes you need to take those risks to be successful or have a positive outcome in a situation. When the fact that some may say no was brought up, I thought about the fact that many people don’t know much of what is happening around us. People are suffering many different ways and we are sort of oblivious to.

Another matter that stood out to me while I was reading this article was the quote “This is a disconcerting calculation, because even if you think you’ve been doing great work, your final score could be smaller or negative.” The reason this stood out for me is because art is an extremely complicated idea that takes a lot of talent to complete. Also, when you create art whether its in the form of a painting, drawing or even a novel you go through a process to get to the final piece that everyone sees. There is a lot of behind the scenes work to get to the finish line that is now displayed. Also sometimes it takes a while to have your art make an impact in society. So, with trial and error you could create something that made a small impact or something that had the opposite affect and create something that had a negative impact.
